Before there were BLACK SLAVES in America...or rather the NEW LAND...there were WHITE Slaves...hundreds of thousands of them who were treated worse than Black Slaves were treated....
In the early 1600's when settlers first started coming to the New Land (America) thousands of WHITE slaves were shipped over...and the new Land was started/formed/built with White Slaves...it was not till the LATE 1700's, early 1800's before Black slaves were shipped from Africa. 88% (according to an article from PBS) of slaves lived on Plantations...that only 20% of white folk owned slaves and out of the 20% who owned slaves the 88% were on Plantations.
WHITE folk for over 200 years were slaves...ISN'T it convenient to totally LEAVE this out of the history books...some of the slaves were refered to as Indigents...street kids...prostitutes.....many today state these folks were not slaves...but the DEFINATION of SLAVES is PEOPLE owned by other PEOPLE...and these folk plucked off of the streets against their will and brought to the promise land were owned by these new WHITE FOLK in the Promise land.
History is History...this part of History has been forgotten...but the next generation of Slavery and history has not been forgotten Stop sweeping the past under the carpet. it happened...remember it happened....as I remember WYLIE DOTY...a great, great, great, great, great, great...okay I don't know how many great's...but it's a lot...cause it was in the 1600's that he came over on the Mayflower as a SLAVE...WHITE Slave...my ancestor....and I am not wanting to rip everything about the MAYFLOWER and the NEW Land apart because my ancestors were turned into SLAVES. The Muslim nations surrounding the Mediterranean Sea captured, sold and traded black and white slaves for centuries.
In 1807 Britain outlawed slavery which caused the south to redistribute existing black slaves.
Indentured servants were a fact of life throughout the civilized world in the middle ages through the enlightenment. Yes some indentured servants were treated horribly while others were treated closer to family and educated, etc.
Indentured servitude was either voluntary in exchange for passage to the new world for instance and alternately criminals including debtors could be sentenced to involuntary to indenture.

I still have issues calling someone on a term sentence a slave. They had legal standing and could sue in a court of law, furthermore their children were not property of the owners. Major differences between a slave and an indentured servant, which was voluntary or court ordered as opposed to sold.
