New Zealand is a much smaller country with an average density of 18 people per square Kilometer versus 35.6 in the US. There are 4.8 million people 1/2 that of New York City) versus 330 million (1/68) and the US is 3558% larger. New Zealand is also an island and kind of off the beaten path. Limiting access to the country is fairly simple, boats or planes. There are only 20 some airports in New Zealand versus hundreds in the US and just a tiny fraction of the total number of flights.
There really is no comparison based on size, population density, access by air, access across a border, or average number of travelers.

From the article:
"Then there are countries, the high-income countries of Europe and North America, which basically didn’t assess this as something they were going to contain, and they initially went for a kind of mitigation approach, like the influenza model, and quickly, quickly realized that, actually, it was a more severe threat than seasonal influenza, and then have generally taken a suppression approach after that of dampening down transmission. But that means they’re stuck, really, in this long-term process of going in and out of lockdown, trying to keep transmission down and minimize fatalities."
That sounds pretty spot on to what we are experiencing.
