I too had a long interest in tall ships, and was twice a captain. I was Coast Guard licensed at the age of 18 (not sure if they still allow them that young these days). Not to make too much of it, my license was limited to vessels of 20 gross tons, coastwise and inland water ways (I grew up on the Chesapeake Bay). I became an Army Captain about seven years later. Many years later I got to serve as a topmast sailor on the volunteers crews of the Brig Pilgrim out of Dana Point, California, and the Topsail Schooner California. It was a thrill for an old Sea Scout. Sadly, loss of balance (Meniere's Disease) put an end to climbing masts.

Excellent post. Thanks for sharing this Brother Kerry. Facts. I had the honor of serving aboard two during my time with the Navy. ☝️
