I wonder if they would have had to Gatling guns one at 6 and one at 12 when the natives were running in circles at that would have mowed them down? Could the Gatling guns have made a difference and stopped or spoiled the attack?

SGT (Join to see) - you may already know this but they had Gatling guns at their disposal but they left them back in the rear.

LTC (Join to see) - Yes I knew that, but they were almost like artillery pieces. It would definitely helped. Didn't the Maxim machine gun start producing not long after this in 1883 or so?

SGT (Join to see) - knock Meyer with the maximum if that's another Gatling gun? There is an awesome military museum at the Idaho State Penitentiary the old one that was closed down it has a weapon the museum inside it. It has a Gatling gun there on display.

Probably would have, but as others have said they were considered artillery and that wasn't needed for the patrol mission Custer had, so got left at home base.

Studied Little Big Horn in detail at FT Leavenworth and the Staff Ride to the battlefield was awesome feeling to walk. One consistent theme that came up as we walked the route was the actions of MAJ Reno one terrain feature away from Custer's position. This was a well done video that laid out a different perspective.
