This intelligence officer had quite a remarkable career. He was born in 1900 in San Francisco, served in the White movement during the Russian Revolution from 1918 to 1920 and was awarded the "Cross of St. George" by the Russians. During WWII, he was also the commander of the Alsos Mission, a US operation established in 1943 to determine how far Germany had progressed in their development of nuclear weapons.
