Back in the day living next to a river was even more risky. Here in Austin the Colorado used to flood on a regular basis until LBJ built the Colorado River Authority which helped somewhat. Living next to the Mississippi River we used to experience regular flooding even with a large control dam right next to us. Don't mess with mother nature as they say..
