Very mixed. That is what makes the website this one chapter is from all the more interesting - being it is a Filipino site that goes into the details of the war.

The Spanish American War was our logical extension of the Monroe Doctrine as we fought Spain in the "New World" LTC Eric Udouj
The fact that we fought Spain in the Philippines and became embroiled in a war with the Moro later,
I concur with you that COL Funston as Commander of the Presido in San Francisco during the great quake that probably left a bigger mark on history than his role as Brig. Gen. Frederick Funston at the Capture of Aguinaldo, 1901.

He was the right man at two occasions and changed history by his actions. It was at the point of the Mexico Expedition where he almost did so again - with the infighting between West Point Officers and others always at his back. Had he lead it - it is likely he would have lead US forces to France as well with very different thoughts of waging war that Pershing had... had his health held out - which it did not. Would have been a very different American Army today.....
