My dog doesn't go outside without me and when there's a knock at the door I put her in the bathroom or the bedroom before I answer it. I thought that was just common sense as a dog owner.

I'm not defending or condoning the officer's actions, especially since the whole story isn't told in this particular article, but there are steps to be taken as a dog owner to protect yourself and your animal.

The police officer who shot the dog was never charged by the county where he worked but they did lose a civil lawsuit where they had to pay the owners of the dog. While the officer that killed Castile was not found guilty I am sure the county where he worked will end up paying money to that man's family if they have not already. This doesn't help bring him back but shows the comparison is not the same. The dog case is a very rare one in that dogs are normally considered property and the police can kill them without worrying about any negative consequences the majority of the time. Courts have even stated dogs do not rate any sort of protection against police.
