I guess we can borrow more money from them in order to counter their efforts in the South China Sea....or we can use our economic leverage (wait they have a 380B/ year trade advantage)....

Um....I guess you forget a few things. 1. That "trade advantage" is rapidly disappearing as the Chinese economy continues to slow. 2. The Chinese have been burning through foreign cash reserves for the past few years. 3. Chinese imports of raw materials have declined substantially due to decreasing foreign demand as well as slowing domestic demand. 4. The Chinese economy is a house of cards, kept alive by bad loans on top of bad loans, just to keep people employed (having three quarters of a billion unemployed would be bad ) 5. The Chinese don't 'own' the US, in fact the Chinese don't hold the most US government debt... JChina has about 1.4 trillion, Japan slightly more. Neither country is going to 'sell it all' and destroy us - first off, the more of the debt they sell, the less value the remainder has, so the return is less (you can't sell if there is no market). Secondly, they hold that debt for trade purposes, the more debt they hold the weaker their currency is to the US, making goods they manufacturer cheaper in the US.
Oh by the way....who holds the most US debt (drum roll) - US citizens, banks and US companies ....
Economics, like logistics ....are the true "Art of War"

GySgt Carl Rumbolo - great breakdown of economic situation. The US spends many times the amount of money on defense as well. Here's a question that I think we need to ask ourselves. Are they our competition or adversary? I the tables were turned wouldn't we do the same to protect our national security? wait, we do....

Seed the South Pacific to create a typhoon - China projecting force is not a good sign - don't forget all their aircraft carriers - this is looking like the prewar expansionism Japan embraced before WWII

"China projecting force is not a good sign - don't forget all their aircraft carriers"...Ido hope you were being sarcastic here. The Chinese have ONE aircraft carrier - the ex Russian carrier "Varyag" which has been extensively modified. While it is 'in service', it is operationally limited and carries 36 total aircraft.
As for nuclear subs, the Chinese navy, according to most reliable open sources, has one Type 095 operational (noise level similar to 637 class), two Type 093 & 4 more expected (noise level around Victor III class), and three Type 091 class - very noisy (November class) and poor radiation shielding.....
As for SSBN, a total of 5 active, 1 building, the 4 Type 094 boats haven't yet been on patrols because the missile intended hasn't completed development (in dev since 2009) and the one Type 092 is very noisy, and hasn't left port in several years. Any patrols have been limited to Chinese waters - and the missile can't reach the US.

Yes a little sarcasm but they are building their own as well. I'm sure as well we had a similar dis-belief in Japan's capabilities. China wants at least 3 carriers in the South China Sea and yes while limited the J-15 can be launched from the old Russian deck. In ten years I'm betting they will have a nuclear class carrier.
