My understanding is that this is going to be horrible for us in the long-run. It overturns long standing international agreements, opens the US to lawsuit for our actions in foreign countries and endangers our diplomatic/intelligence staff. All in the name of not wanting to be the guys who said no to something involving 9/11 victims.
If that's accurate, congress just made an enormous mistake that will be nigh impossible to undo.

I have to agree on this point. I'm just amazed Congress finally vetoed something, and when they did it was the wrong thing.

LTC Stephen F. I know that many want to hold someone responsible, but I am not so sure this is the best thing. Pandora's box has been opened.

LTC (Join to see) Since the assault on the Grand Mosque in Mecca in 1979 the House of Saud has been blackmailed into financing Wahhabi doctrine in western schools including the USA. [1979 was the year Pandora's Box was opened in Iran and Saudi Arabia]
Whether or not the House of Saud is found liable or not allowing the process to go forward is important.
The House of Saud would be able to save face by pointing out which of the intel service personnel were involved or aware of the 9-11-2001 attacks on our nation beforehand.
I would like to see the families of the victims to have their day in court if for nothing else to allow them to state their case.

LTC Stephen F. - you bring up some interesting points I hadn't considered. Testimony or intel reports introduced into evidence could be interesting. I am more concerned about deployed personnel and the suits that military personnel could face as a result.

LTC (Join to see) - yesterday I was participating in a discussion related to this about threats to our deployed forces [UN already tried to go down that path a few times and did the Hague].
If the USA was guilty of launching terrorist attacks in Afghan or Iraq they might have case. Syria may have a case against us but that gets into sensitive area.
We have been operationally constrained in Afghanistan and Iraq just like we were in when I was stationed in Germany decades ago. If you knocked down and tree or killed a farm animal there were calculations for how many generations of animal descendants the US government would pay for. That was part of international relations and our SOFA.
SOFA and other State Department initiated agreements apply to Iraq and Afghanistan as they did in the former Yugoslav republics and in Somalia operations.
That is the way we operate - because we are a nation of laws we are generally responsible to do what is right.
Kangaroo courts have brought USA citizens up on charges frequently over the past century. The US State Department is responsible for responding to those and has the lead when US service members or leaders are charged in foreign courts.
We need to do what is right for our own people.

I'm of mixed opinion on this.
I am all for American victims getting their day in court, but we are far from innocent and I would hate to see Iraqi plaintiffs draining our treasury over their losses as a result of our invasion of their country.
