As I said in another Line, The concept is not to bring an old BB out of retirement to prove it, the question is COULD IT? and the answer is YES, Most definitely! One shell would send it to Davey Jones Locker.
Can you imagine what a 16 inch HE round would do to that soup can? At least those of us who have seen what a 16" projectile could do when it hits its target, can. It is not pretty!, Matter of fact there is not much left of what it targeted. Remember these bad Boys were made to penetrate 12" of Battleship Armor then explode. The AP Mark 8: 2,700 lb. HC Mark 13: 1,900 lb. and the sweet meat Nuclear Mark 23: 1,900 lb. The Mark 23 did not need to penetrate, it just melted everything down within a mile radius and well you know the rest from the old NBC Warfare training..
Greg, You are close by saying that an Arleigh Burke class can put more chemical energy down range, because the BB's were not designed for that. They were designed for "TOT" Tons on Target. and with the development of the "RAP" (Rocket Assisted Projectile) shell an IOWA class could send a projectile the size of a Volkswagen Bug down range 20 miles. With 9 barrels able to fire 2 shells a minute, THAT is a LOT of TOT and that does not include the 10 5-inch 38 cal. Mark 12 guns on each side that can also be lobbing shells. A Full Broadside (9 16" and 10 5" firing at once) will push an IOWA Cass battlewagon sitting at rest, 59,000 tons displacement, 15 to 20 yards as recoil. THAT is a shitload of kinetic energy! LOL

Interesting premise, but the entire reason BB's are extinct now is that modern destroyers can deliver far more chemical and kinetic energy downrange than the BB's ever could, at a fraction of the cost.
