I'm in favor of a separate combatant command for space. Critics of the Air Force's focus on space (and I am not one of them) frequently argue that we need a warfighter mentality to address the fact that space is no longer a benign environment (if it ever was). So if warfighting focus is your answer, SPACECOM is a pretty good solution in my book. I am not in favor of a separate military service, however. Historical point of reference: Prior to Sept 11, 2001, we had a separate Space Command, but after the terror attacks on America, there was a push to stand up a homeland defense command (we know this as NORTHCOM) Then Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld did not want to add more overhead by standing up an additional command so he combined the nuclear and space commands to create STRATCOM.
