I usually do not vote party line. And I know the Republicans are just as much to blame for what is wrong with the US right now as the Democrats. But I cannot vote for someone that has allowed Americans under her watch to die and then lie about why they died to the whole Nation. Benghazi is still there and she has never apologized or even admitted to doing wrong in their deaths even after proof is now there she did.

SFC Charles Temm - The "fair share" used to be much higher prior to 1982. The $250k+ club's tax rates has steadily decreased since then to come much more on par with the percentages paid by today's sub-$250k club.

In short, the stairs weren't totally eliminated, but the top step got a lot lower and the top few steps got a lot closer together.

To define fair is a big argument, for sure.

SFC (Join to see) - the higher the tax rate, the fewer actually pay into it. Rich folks and others will spend less time/money trying to get every penny back they can if THEY consider the rates "fair". Read a bit about how many folks actually paid ANY taxes under the millionaire rates imposed earlier in the 20th century. That was one of the first lessons we got exposed to basic econ; higher tax rates equal lower revenue.

Inflation has crushed many into higher brackets by reducing tax deductions. People are making "more" but once adjusted for inflation, they are behind. We won't even get into the discussion about all the other fed "contributions" piled on and what the effects of ObamaCare have been financially on so many of us. That last one has become a huge indirect tax b/c of what the meddling w/the ins market by the Dem party.

SFC Charles Temm - Do you have any data to back up the claim that when a tax bracket has an increase in taxable percentage, less people pay into it? I have not noticed any evidence to indicate that is a fair or correct statement.

SFC (Join to see) - Charles Adams has several good histories on taxation. A good source is the writings of Thomas Sowell. First person accts by the SecTreas Andrew Mellon also pointed that out behavior changes when the income tax was "only" hitting "higher" income folks. Instead of investing in businesses, they invested in non taxable municipal bonds which benefited only.... (wait for it) government. Many cynical types would say that was the goal of course, giving pols at a local level more money to toss out for votes.

If you had not noticed any such evidence that people will work less to avoid higher taxes then you haven't looked hard. It's counter intuitive to believe any significant number of people do NOT change their behavior when it becomes more costly for them to continue it. A good way of checking into the idea is simply check Treasury reports of revenue sucked in by various taxes/rate increases versus the predicted amounts. Year One usually sees a marked increase followed by a larger decrease in the following years once people adjust.

Old economic maxim is if you want less of something, tax it more. A truism known in even Egyptian times.
