You know me; can't take things on face value (LOL)...I'll learn someday, I guess.

Music is powerful. Of all forms of art, it has the ability to simultaneously impact our senses and emotions in ways visual art cannot. Combined with visual art however, it becomes even more influential. Amazing Grace is awesome-put it to pipes, and it's ethereal-show a video of the Scots Greys performing it...well, you're going to make grown men cry. I'm not much of a "metal head" myself; I go for a strange mix of seventies rock, Dvorak, and eighties pop (hey, I'm complicated)...but this video's imagery isn't lost on me. The message here is clear; money is evil, it corrupts governments, oppresses the people...and the people will fight back, right?

My problem with this message (if not most post-modern ideology) is two-fold: first, the "people" aren't the hero here... this strange, masked, chained, flying "avenger" is. Second, our nameless "savior" is just another symbol; like the "fat cat" full o' money, he's an avatar for something allegorical, while most of the other characters are vignettes of more specific people and deeds. The implication is that the "power" is something that acts upon us...something we need to wait for, answer to, and revere. I believe in such a power...but I believe that light has it's counterpart in darkness.

The power to overcome subjugation, enslavement, exploitation, and oppression comes from the open heart, not the upraised fist. We can't strong-arm the masters of strength, or put fear into the minds of those who manipulate fear. Desire, anger, rage...all these do is weaken us to the weapons "they" crafted long ago to turn love into obsession, need into addiction, and pain into ecstasy.

So, here's my share...from a man who came from among the poor, inheriting a divisive heritage, born of all the worst things humans do to one another. Someone who served his country, used his talents to promote brotherhood, and oppose prejudice, gained much in the nation he loved...and gave back often. In this video, he sings the anthem of a troubled land...brother against brother, but pours his soul into words that inspire us to have hope, faith, and trust that truly...His Truth is Marching On:
