Duterte says Philippines can survive without American military help

Thank you my friend SGM Steve Wettstein for posting. Since 1898 we have periodically sent forces to the Philippines. First we went there to oust the Spanish. We defended the islands until the Japanese banzai attacks in 1941-1942. Then we are our allies liberated the islands and the prisoners who survived.
We based air force and naval/marines in the Philippines through the Korean and Vietnam Wars. During Vietnam, political unrest and resentment for our military presence followed the unrest in our own nation.
It was unsurprising that the Filipinos pushed for us to abandon Clark Air Base and Subic Bay naval base in September 199 after the Filipino Senate rejected a new military-bases agreement.

Periodically we were involved in training and sometimes assisting in interdiction. After 9-11-2001 the training and interdiction increased especially in some of the southern islands.

They are rejecting our overt military assistance. I wouldn't be surprised to learn 50 years from now that covert assistance is relatively unchanged :-)

I've heard that before.
I would say that Duterte is correct, and his job will be easier since he won't have as many islands to govern.
