I'm not sure how to feel about the Dept. of Education.
While I agree that the States should do more, there does need to be some type of standardization between the states systems. Otherwise, children transferring to different schools could be at a huge disadvantage if their previous school does not have the same curriculum as their new school. Could also pose a huge issue with children from certain states being able to succeed in college.
The standardize testing needs to go away though. All it does is limit a teachers ability to teach.

I believe that education is a function best left to local governments and the states. The Federal Government should never have gotten involved in Education. As I read the Constitution, there is no support for a Department of Education. Republicans and Democrats have stretched the "general welfare" and "commerce" clauses of the Constitution too far and given us bloated Federal spending, reduced state and local control, and more limited personal freedom.
