He's a failure? Oh, that's funny. He comes from a comfortably middle-class family from South Africa. His dad paid some, not all of his college expenses.
Elon Musk's first million came from a digital startup, Zip 2. His seed capital was $28,000 that's thousands not millions.
He was able to develop the Zip2, and attract additional investors based on the potential value of the company. Compaq bought the Zip2 in 1999. Musk walked away with $22million. After paying off the investors who had the vision to see what Zip2 was becoming, Musk walked away with $22million. That was his first big payday.
Musk then reinvested those millions into what became PayPal and walked away from that venture with a net worth over $165million in just 3 years.
Through hard work and calculated risk, he has built a net worth of hundreds of billions.
