The greatest mistake We the People made was to surrender our dreams to our government. NASA accomplished one small goal, landing on the Moon and returning the astronauts safely to Earth. Then what? The Shuttle. Starliner. Massive wastes of money. Arguably, no more a waste than the Race to the Moon, but at least that project accomplished its mission. No, if We're going to dream, We must also do the hard work of realizing those dreams. Realizing our dreams is not a function of government.

To be fair, NASA did realize the dream of bringing a man to the moon. That was pretty much all government. Kennedy had a vision and a clear timeline. People believed in that vision and executed on it and they did it. So what was the leadership vision after that? There really wasn't one.
NASA floated around for years after that with no clear goal or direction to sail the ship. The same thing happened to them that happens to most organizations in that position. This wasn't a government as an organization problem, this was a leadership and goal setting problem and would have hit any type of organization the same way, government or no. We used to do great things, and the government was the organization that brought those things to pass. What happened?
