Interestingly enough, Mardi Gras in New Orleans is a very large event. But Mardi Gras actually originated in Mobile, Alabama. The Mardi Gras in Mobile is more family oriented and is still a good time.

SGT John " Mac " McConnell, "Mardi Gras in Mobile is the annual Carnival celebration in Mobile, Alabama. It is the oldest annual Carnival celebration in the United States, started by Frenchman Nicholas Langlois in 1703." Well done, CPT (Join to see)! LTC Stephen F.

SGT John " Mac " McConnell - I used to have a great time walking with the floats as part of the ROTC at South Alabama. The cadets walked in the parades every year to raise money for the ball at the end of the semester.

CPT (Join to see), we lived in New Orleans (Slidell) for 2.5 years during the eighties and went to Mardi Gras twice. You probably know that there are many, many krewes that "roll" on Mardi Gras, and the days leading up to it as well. To that end, specific parade routes have established, with the most popular, of course, being the downtown route that rolls down Canal Street and St. Charles Avenue. That's the route for ADULTS! Krewes no longer roll through the French Quarter.
We had young children at the time, so we always went to the Metairie route that included large flat bed trucks as well as floats made by the krewes and this route had more family friendly krewes. SGT John " Mac " McConnell LTC Stephen F.

Thanks SGT John " Mac " McConnell for sharing the beginning of Mardi Gras in New Orleans, I did not realize it began so early. It began a quarter century after the War of 1812 and over a quarter century before the Civil War. That was a peaceful period for many [not the slaves though].
The fact that the first Mardi Gras celebration in New Orleans dates back to when a group of masked students danced through the streets. Since "a rich plantation owner hosting an official Mardi Gras party in 1833" I would have thought that would have been the official beginning.
