The reality is the Communist overthrew the legitimate Government of China and the leadership fled to Taiwan (which was called Formosa then) The constant moves from the illegitimate control by the Communist party of China and aggressive moves all over many part of the globe is very disturbing. That often included financial control of other nations by moving in on their economies. After the US pulled out of Vietnam China attempted an invasion and was defeated by Vietnam and 34,000 Chinese soldiers were killed and over 450 of their tanks destroyed by the Vietnamese Military who also dominated the air with their aerial combat experience.

Taiwan needs two systems: the AN/TWQ-1 Avenger, and Japan's Type 96 Multipurpose Missile System. Two missile platforms with signatures too low to be targeted by PLARF. The Avenger makes it impractical to try an airborne operation. The Type 96 makes it impractical to try an amphibious operation. They don't need F-35s. They don't need Abrams. They don't need anything but lots and lots of Avengers and Type 96s.

I think there are plenty of Taiwanese who will refuse a life under CCP rule. Should China invade, I think they will pay a very heavy price.
