His ordeal as a POW, however, helped fuel his political career. As a senator, he could speak with authority on military matters. Perhaps the most striking example was when he challenged the George W. Bush administration and its "enhanced interrogation" of terrorism suspects. McCain decried the practice as torture.

When, as a POW, he was offered a chance to be released ahead of those who had been there longer because of who his father was........and he declined.......that told me all I need to know about the character of this man. I didn't vote for him, because I didn't agree with his politics, but I never doubted his character. Rest in peace, John McCain......you stood your watch with honor and dignity.
