This is a fascinating tale, one that I had not heard before. I will share it elsewhere. BTW, I knew of one other bugler in Vietnam. Although I did not witness his performances, I heard of them while reading award recommendations to panels of officers passing on them. LT Larry Garner was a platoon leader of mechanized infantry. He and his men wore cavalry hats and yellow scarves and rode into battle atop their APC's (can't fight from inside) while a bugler played charge.
