Historians keep trying to make it sound like Hitler ordered the invasion against the advice of his Generals. The Generals had been planning the invasion since 1937. Their Staff Study predicted that if they didn't defeat the Soviet Union by 1944 the russians would defeat them

And the worst is yet to come. If World War II proved anything its that you can't back a country into a corner with severe sanctions for several years and expect a peaceful outcome via their capitulation all the time. In our attempts to avoid war and casualties we ignore or shelve the preemptive military strike option which is usually the lower cost casualty solution to boxed in dictators................who eventually choose a surprise attack on the United States versus capitulation. Japan was the country in World War II that choose war as a way out of crippling sanctions. My guess is it will be Russia the next time at some point when it looks like they have no other option.

Thanks for reminding us TSgt Joe C. that on June 29, 1941 week after launching the massive invasion of the USSR in Operation Barbarossa, German divisions make staggering advances on Leningrad, Moscow, and Kiev.
