I believe old Adolph came to regret this decision
Hitler had a lot of reason to think that the Japanese Army in Manchuria would throw in and attack the Soviets. After all, they had fought some sharp and nasty battles there a few years earlier. Even without a hot war, the Japanese Army in Mukden forced the Soviets to keep several excellent divisions on the border to keep an eye on them.
When Japan signed a non-aggression pact with the Soviets (apparently, Molotov hadn't learned his lesson yet), the Soviets were able to redeploy a number of these units to the front and their appearance on the field outside Moscow was a very nasty surprise for the Wehrmacht.
