Numbers are a factor but often the technology and modern tactics and quick unexpected action can knock down the other guys numbers and take away that advantage. The better trained troops have some advantage over a herd but unless the herd is cut down to a manageable size the advantage is only temporary. Its important also to make sure that when overtaking an enemy position there is a valid reason to even want to occupy that if there isn't let them hold it and perhaps take their people out of the picture by holding ground You don't need to occupy and concentrate on objectives that give You an advantage especially if they don't reduce Your own numbers by large amounts. Master the "Art of War" as laid out by Sun Tzu during the Chinese Ming Dynasty, (1368-1644), those that followed that Chinese General's doctrine had victory instead of defeat.

We have proven that overwhelming technology and resources are only so good and that time is critical in having that superiority before an enemy figures out how to counter it. Good points Lawrence!

Great article! It seems that it is about local superiority of combat power. Technology can overcome the strict number of soldiers, but it takes combat leadership (at multiple echelons working together) to get local superiority, which can defeat more powerful opponents. Played out enough times over the course of a war and you have the victory.
