You would not believe the lengths people go to to sneak varmints into Hawaii. While I was stationed there, we saw articles of people who were caught attempting to sneak snakes onto the islands hidden in pool cue cases, pants legs (oooooh), and other clever places. Then there were the failed experiments when varmints were imported by officials thinking they might eradicate other varmints. For example, they imported mongooses to eradicate rats whose population exploded after climbing off ships that visited the islands. That failed because rats are nocturnal scavengers and mongoose hunt during the day. They never met, and the mongoose population exploded because they too had no natural predators on the islands.
