Totally incorrect, President Obama. First of all, great job in obfuscating the issue. Second, the NRA is NOT about wanting bad guys to get firearms. It's totally NOT about that but good job in twisting what the NRA and its members, like me, want. Third, trying to compare automobile purchasing and operating including licensing to firearms is severely dishonest. Operating an automobile is a PRIVILEGE which can be revoked at ANY time, and it has been for many people. Acquiring and operating a firearm is a RIGHT, which is protected by the 2A from infringement by the government. A PRIVILEGE is substantially different than a RIGHT, something that YOU and your fellow Democrats seem to fail to understand. Continuing on, the research of automobiles encompasses a great many areas. What you have described is several parts which includes automobile construction and road construction. What you totally fail to articulate is the laws governing the operation of automobiles. Those laws PUNISH people who improperly operate an automobile just as there are State and Federal laws punishing people who IMPROPERLY operate or misuse a firearm. I think that is something you may have missed in law school because many of us regular non-lawyer citizens know this to be true. Research by automobile manufacturers in order to improve safety features as well as general operational capacity of automobiles is the same as firearm manufacturers who upgrade and update their products as technology improves. This is significantly different than the LAWS for each item. You mention background checks for firearms as if to equivocate it to the licensing of drivers. A background check is NOT required in order to obtain a driver's license. As you stated, a person has to take an eye test, a written test, and a driver's test as well as pay a fee before obtaining a license. NOWHERE is a background check for a PRIVILEGE involved, yet you want to sell us that background checks for a RIGHT is necessary. This is both dishonest and deceptive. Fourth, as I mentioned above, the NRA is about firearm safety and education both of which must be undertaken freely by each individual, not forced by governmental bureaucrats. The NRA not only has great training courses but also has a great safety program designed specifically for children. It is a vastly much more successful program than anything else you and the "anti-gun" groups have been able to put out. All of this is available to ANYONE who so desires to learn more about the operation of firearms as well as teaching children what to do in case they run across an unsecured firearm. The problem though is this must be done by free will, by choice of each person or parent. Safety and general education cannot be forced as you so wish to do but through the free will desire to learn. Fifth and final, all laws pertaining to firearms that do not specifically address the misuse of a firearm are dishonest, are an infringement, and does eventually lead toward the confiscation of firearms. PERIOD, whether you agree with it or not! Those are facts. The 2A is abundantly clear in the limitation of the government on firearms: "SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED". That means absolutely NO law restricting access, no law restricting acquisition, and no law restricting possession. What the government can do is put forth laws that punish those who willfully choose to misuse a firearm in any manner. The key word here, Mr President, is MISUSE. If a person steps outside their home and fires a gun into the air just because they want to then that is misuse and they deserve to be punished. If a person CHOOSES to misuse a firearm as a weapon in violence against another person then they too deserve to be punished...heavily. It is NOT about the acquisition of a firearm but in the MISUSE of the firearm that must be addressed. You might want to go back to law school to freshen up, Mr. President.
