I didn't know Avast bought Piriform. I preferred Cleanup! or CCleaner, though. Oh, and they did a good job of downplaying the fact that a popular infosec company has malicious software.

You want to know a disturbing thought -
What if Ubuntu's requiring an Ubuntu.com account to download SNAP packages on Ubuntu-based distros led to a similar issue?

SSG Derek Scheller, SSgt Mark Lines, SN Greg Wright, thoughts?

SGT (Join to see) The need for an Ubuntu Account is the reason why I am looking into Flatpacks and Appimages over Snaps. Both options also tend to be smaller downloads than Snaps. There is quite a big debate going on right now about whether Snaps or Flatpacks are better for Linux. Many of the Ubuntu Faithful think that Flatpacks are just another way for Red Hat to ruin Ubuntu as they are doing with Gnome 3. Flatpack Adherents are saying that Snaps are just a way for Ubuntu to throw their weight around. Both arguments make no sense what so ever...

SSgt Mark Lines - Going off what you said, I believe Ubuntu is throwing its weight around. However, I can survive with apt-get and AppImages.

By the way, I'm almost done with my 1-minute Etcher tutorial. I hope you don't mind my calling you out -
"Once during a conversation about the UNetbootin Linux burner Mark from markexpeditions.blogspot.com brought up Etcher - another open source application with similar features but simpler."
