I lived directly in the path of the main runway of McChord Air Force Base in Tacoma, Washington. My Dad could tell by the sound of the engines, what type of aircraft it was. When the winds got bad, I saw, for the first time, a large airplane fly sideways.

When very young, I lived under the flightpath of the B-52s leaving Guam for Operation Linebacker in Vietnam. While terrified that they'd accidentally drop their bombs on me, I nevertheless watched them leaving with fascination (from under the cover of any nearby roof, as if that would've done any good, but hey, 6 years old, right?). I guess aviation stuck with me. :-)
