Everyone carried a Claymore, with the exception of the RTO,Medic,Machine gunner,(assistant did though) found them excellent on NDPs ,ambushes, if used for prolonged time periods best check for interference from bad guys, those rascals loved to booby trap and reverse, didn’t begrudge the extra weight, about the same as two cans of Ham and Limas, now that’s useless weight, Welcome Home Brothers.

One Mine that was in common used as shown here was the Claymore Mine which stuck into the top of the ground or even into the side of a tree. Our unit the 366th Security Police Squadron at Da Nang, Air Base, Vietnam used them on our perimeter. We did have wires running from the mines to our fixed perimeter posts. One some of them He mounted switch on a small piece of plywood which the wire ran from so We could select which mines We set off when under attack. We had our mines behind concertina wire which would slow them down and let them get the full effect of the explosion. Notice the raised print on the front side of the mine, If You had it faced the wrong way it wasn't the enemy You would kill but Yourselves. We were VERY careful with that.

We tried to put them behind trees because of backblast. Then also setting the pins on trip flares very sensitive. Sometimes too sensitive and pop. Then screaming GI so your buddies wouldn't open up on you. Someone said we said GI because Charley couldn't pronounce the letter G.
