How does protesting during a football game achieve whatever goal they want?

I think it depends on what you do. Do something real and I doubt there will be an issue. Start a school or tutoring program for kids, start a prison program, feed the hungry, etc, no problem. Make a show and people will not respect you.

Taking a stand has always been a challenge in every situation, it's true everywhere nothing to do with race, it is simply taking a different stand then everyone else is hard. No different than a women's vote advocate or a underground railroad supporter. It's the same for a baker not willing to make a specialized cake for a gay wedding.
What is important is that you stand for justice, and not for your ideas of a utopian social injustice. Most of us find it mind blowing that athletes kneeling for an anthem while making millions of dollars for playing a game done understand they appear more ungrateful then they appear genuine. If they actually cared they'd be doing more to solve the problems rather than just getting a spotlight.
