As a proud survivor of one of those shock trials, I will tell you that I would never do it again! The only times they are done is the first ship of the class, and after a major refit is major structural changes are made. I will say that it does give you confidence that your ship can take damage and keep on fighting! During the trial there is only a minimal ship's crew (not everyone onboard) and the civilian contractors overseeing the test.

"The only times they are done is the first ship of the class, and after a major refit is major structural changes are made"....Sir this is on par with Airborne folks thinking the old line "Who wants to jump out of a perfectly good aircraft". Apparently 64 Soldiers do with gear made in China, but labeled Made in America, and packed by a rigger who is short, doesn't care, and doesn't know you. At least it's quick if it fails. In this, you have to be IN this thing to test it? HELLS TO DA NAW!!! Ground doesn't break or move, if I burn in, green grass will grow.

Those Sailors had about as much choice as you did when you were dodging Jihadi Jack's leaden packets of love. Lol.

It is funny how we look at what other services do and think that is crazy. To me a shock trial is normal. Dodging bullets and riding around in tanks is crazy.

LT Brad McInnis - No one said we are the most intelligent bunch of assholes, but we're one brain cell smarter than the Marines.

SSG Warren Swan - Hah. As someone that once saw a Marine pick up a piece of pepperoni out of his own puke and eat it -- again, -- I have to agree with you!

SN Greg Wright - umm......you do know that I had to read this twice before responding? If I was his NCO, I'd question why I didn't get this Marine sooner in my career. This one is a true professional who holds the highest standards of drunkdom of any serviceman or servicewoman. It's said the AF is known for giving out "participation awards", well this Marine will have everything short of the MOH. I would counsel myself for not being there sooner to witness this fine specimen of success from PI, blessed to the Corps which we serve. I'd volunteer to tape myself to the hull of this ship naked, and detonate this bomb.....personally. If you thought Chuck was tough, this Marine shut him down. See Chuck is dumbfounded and silent.

SSG Warren Swan It was a controlled explosion and they knew it was coming. No problem.

Sheeiiittt......."controlled"? You remember who made the equipment you use. It may say "made in the USA".....by a Chinese or Taiwan worker. We just had a SPC die in a training accident. A 120MM mortar killed her, and the LAST picture she took was of the blast that killed her. There is no such thing as a "controlled" explosion. Either it goes off, or it's dud. I'm not Navy so looking at this, I couldn't do it. Dropping a 120 is something I have done, and know if it doesn't fire, RUN. If I don't run, then I get what I give.
