Germany, like Canada, only puts in 1.2% of their Gross domestic product toward its defense and that is why President Trump complains about many NATO allies yet Germany needs to select a new fighter-bomber because the Toronado will probably not last after 2025. This jet has been around since the late 70s.

Just like welfare, if you supply their needs, they become less self sufficient.

In otherwords the pressure to buy US jets is strong with equally strong opposition; otherwise they’d commit to the Eurofighter already and make this a non-issue. Think Germany possessing a nuclear weapon carrying capability is a non issue in today’s world of mid-long range ballistic missile capabilities.
