I was 12 and followed this on TV. It started with Demonstrations against the Police. The Police called in the Army and the Army turned on them. They then routed what Soviet Troops were there and everything was quiet. While the Hungarians called for help to stop the Red Army from coming back.
The Soviets had their point, much of the Army and the Police had been Arrow Cross. The Hungarian Nazis who were often worse than the Germans. When the SS fled Budapest the Arrow Cross had continued to fight. This was only 11 years later.
The Soviets offered to meet with them to discuss a solution. They shot Imre Nagy and General Pal. Then they leveled the city.
No one helped

Thank you for the short article. I knew about the 68 Czechoslovakian 4 billion but I never really knew much of the 1956 Rebellion. Very interesting. When the polish Cardinal became Pope, this set the stage for the fall of communist a few years later. The Bloodshed continued under the Polish regime and solidarity fought back.
This is on Netflix. This all works hand-in-hand with what happened in Budapest. The Polish people did not forget.https://youtu.be/X69P1LAs4xg
