USNS Invincible is a missile tracking ship. USNS ship with a limited crew and even more limited capacity for self defense. The escorting ships are there to protect here. This incident is not really a big deal as it occurs all the time. The soviets did this during the Cold War and the Iranians do it now. Any outcome besides what they did would be a negative for the U.S.
There is always a desire to shoot but that is an act of war in international waters. We should be video taping the incident and also manning self defense weapons system and continuing on our way. Let them take the first shot and then we can end the fight through superior firepower. That is how you win this situation.

Hyperbolic title (not you, Major, the author's). This happens all the time, and not just military vessels. There's international rules of the road that everyone has to follow, and that sometimes means you have to alter course. Of course, this was a military action, but still, not at all uncommon. I'll add to the Commander's response that we do it, too.

Thank you for us land loving army guys who don't know so thank you for putting into perspective but it is a good suggestion like the commander said to have video evidence. I'm sure most Navy ships have some kind of video evidence or a dedicated camera man on board especially in that tense location.
