Thought the Long War article was the better one on this - however - some interesting speculation in regards to items captured in this. Whatever may be the case - the fact is that they are in a better position now than have been for months.

ISIS seizes big Russian-Syrian T-4 air base
Islamic State forces pushed forward their assault to retake the central Syrian town of Palmyra Monday, Dec. 12, and by evening had entered the big Russian-Syrian T-4 air base outside the town, carrying off substantial quantities of Russian armaments. Reporting this, debkafile added: They booty they snatched included different types of ground-to-ground missiles as well as anti-tank and anti-air rockets.

The more Toys the Better, Better Toys the Better. Another good reason for us to have Counter Measures and Electronic Warfare Aircraft, I know it was brought in due to the Close Proximity of our Operations near Russians and other Non Friendlies but!

I still think they have a push-pull tactic going on. Give up land to take elsewhere. Now, this tactic also relies on having a non-depleting force, which they do not appear to have.
