It suits me, COL (Join to see). I'm glad that the Army decided such, even using the "gas mask theory". I've always preferred and appreciated the uniform look provided by clean shaven faces.
However, I've been retired since MAY98, so my two cents is not even worth two cents!

Never bought the pro-mask argument. You're telling me that only the most highly trained, best equipped, and costly fighters as well as the religious are allowed to be gassed to death but (sarcasm to follow) godless, heathen truck drivers and bang bangs must be saved at the expense of the beard? C'mon... we all know the real reason is because the army cant even police a standard on a 2inch wide patch of hair above the lip, let alone a full beard.

Special Forces receive a special gas masked designed to seal even with facial hair. These masks are expensive so, therefore, not practical to give out to every soldier. As such, the masks they give out to the regular soldiers really don't seal well with a beard.
Religious accommodation comes with the understanding that your Unit's Commander can order you to shave when a Chem attack is believed to be imminent (funny enough, the article the OP linked to mentions this.)
As much as people don't seem to want to believe that being clean shaven is for their own safety, that's really what it comes down to.

Sorry still not buying it. Mopp gear (if issued) isn't taken on patrols, or carried around base. Very little chance of chem attack state side and even if it happened they're locked in the arms room. If it is about safety command can always order troops to be clean shaven while deployed if beards are allowed stateside...
