Many in South Korea do not like the idea of reunification....because it means South Korea paying for everything for Communist nKorea.

During Reagan administration, "trust, but verify" eventually emerged. Both US and USSR had inspectors in each other's countries for nuclear weapon compliance. Summits mean nothing unless there is follow-up action to ensure proper balanced reconciliation. It seems like South Korea and US are doing most of the giving, but North Korea and China are doing most of the taking.

Both countries have very different definitions of what denuclearizing means, while sanctions have been effective in some measures, without China applying legitimate pressure, the ruling class won't have any incentive to change. Unless the NK military turns against the party, I can't see any meaningful change occurring on the peninsula.
