I think the Western states are justifiably pissed off at the Federal Government. In Nevada's case, 84% of the land in the State is owned by the Federal Government. I do not know this for a fact, but my guess is that there was jury nullification. The jury knows a crime has been committed but does not care because they think the "victim got what he deserved". So they present a not guilty verdict. Remember the west is largely populated by the descendants of people that left Europe because of Europe's BS governments. Then East Coast BS, got to be too much, Then mid-West BS got to be too much. They stopped in Nevada, because California already had to much BS. The end result, Nevada has little tolerance for Federal BS. :) Manifest Destiny in a nutshell.

PFC Jim Wheeler - A lot of the land was taken by treaties which were then broken, or by the Federal government demanding that Indians leave one reservation and move to another. If you were a white landowner, then yes... the government would most likely compensate you.

Especially with a Portland jury! If it was made up of a representative sample of Portland residents, you might expect a verdict of So-Damn-Guilty-You-Should-Shoot-Them-All-In-The-Parking-Lot.
Must have had something to do with the evidence and the quality of the defense.
