Actually the Northern Army of Virginia beat the Army of the Potomac at Spotsylvania Court House, Virginia on May 08, 1864 TSgt Joe C..
In ancient days duels were fought but by this time armies waged war on behalf of their nation.

Lee's Army certainly handled the Army of the Potomac Roughly at both the Wilderness and Spotsylvania Courthouse in just a few days in May Union Losses over both battles was a staggering 36,000 men while the Confederates lost 23,000.
Lee stopped Grant's attacks, kept his front intact and bloodied them badly.
Lesser commanders than Grant would have pulled back over the Rapidan River and licked their wounds and try to come up with a fancy plan to out-general Lee.
Grant was not cut from that cloth. He knew that his Men were fighters and the fastest way to win the war was to slug it out with the smaller Army and keep them engaged while he pushed to his left and worked towards Richmond.
Lees victories at the Wilderness were hollow in the fact that the ground his men had fought over was untenable because Grant just pushed around his right flank and drove toward Richmond. It became a summer of bloody fights, long forced marches, entrenching, then repeat. By July Grant had Lee just where he wanted him, In a static defensive position where he couldn't manuever. Game Over.
