I just came across this Wiki article on Leonard Matlovich. I had not heard of him before but found his story very interesting. He did much to promote the acceptance of gays in the military at a time when it was when it was an extremely unpopular subject. He was a brave man, from his time in Vietnam to his death in Los Angeles due to AIDS.

Most of us knew troops who were gay and in the military. We just didn't talk about it. As long as they did their jobs and didn't bother anyone most went on with their careers. It is certainly better today when people can openly speak about their preference but gays have served for a long time.

We had a very strikingly handsome corpsman on one ward I worked on. A lot of the female corpsman had a crush on him, only problem, he was gay. He was a good worker and tough.

LTC David Brown - I was attending A-School at the Height of the "Disco" Age and Just Like in the Movies, Everybody would be on the Dance Floor at the Start but as the Dance Progressed Most would leave the Floor too the Better Dancers, An Airman T-Bird and I and whatever Ladies We Chose for the Evening would be Left (No Ladies ever said No to Either of Us when Asked to Dance). I always had to Bow Out because He was Much Better than I but to Him the Ladies were Mere Decoration. Yes He was Gay but Damn that Man Could Dance!

When I was in the AF as a aircraft maintainer there were a few people that I knew they are gay. They did their job getting the aircraft(s) fixed and ready to fly. I worked along side with them many times I had no problems with them. It's not my thing but I felt I had no right to harrass or judge them either. I just judge them on their work performance. As long as they can preform their duties to the best of their abilities I have no issues.
