These women were decades before the "women's movement." They saw the need for women to relieve men from the "mundane" CONUS flying duties so that they would be available for the war. Amongst those "mundane" duties were: 1) flying planes pulling targets so that ground & airborne gunners could learn how to shoot them down (and some women pilots died because of poor shooting); 2) flying so disabled planes to repair sites that male pilots were "saved" for more dangerous missions; 3) ferrying planes across the country & over to England to make sure that airplanes remained available for the war. Those are only a few of the things these amazing women did. They were amazing, in fact inspiring for all the women aviators, both military & civilian, who followed on.
