And like Stalin once said: "quantity is its own quality." One of our LA Class subs was worth five of their Victors. Problem is, they could afford to lose five Victors...

SN Greg Wright - No they were never a match, their equipment was substandard and still is, they lacked motivation to maintain and operate the crap that they had.

LCDR (Join to see) - I'll agree that their equipment is substandard now, at least in terms of Naval capability, but at the height of the cold war, they were every bit as formidable. In terms of fighter aircraft, they always have been, and still are, toe-to-toe with us each generation, and that trend looks to continue with the upcoming Sukhoi PAK FA as a counter to the F-22.

SN Greg Wright - I was an analyst for the last part of the 80 into the 90 like everyone else concentrated on the USSR, the height of the cold war, and while we were in the practice of not underestimating our enemy their stuff was junk. One of the reasons I went to college and got my commission was because they finally recognized that themselves and gave up. While I am glad we never went “toe to toe” because a lot of people would have died in the end the superiority of the US Carrier Battle Group and US Air Force would have prevailed. As far as you reference to “upcoming” technology we have heard that story for years and they are still fielding equipment from the early 80s. It is all junk just like it was back then.
