Unless there is more to it than in the article, this was excessive. It takes years of experience and ability to reach his position. Serious loss to the Marines,

Sometimes the Academy folks get pushed ahead too fast and they really don't have the experience and have been insufficiently "tested" for promotions and positions

I'm not sure how it works in the Army, but USNA grads that choose USMC don't get promoted any faster or slower than their OCS, PLC, and ROTC peers. And at least in my day, the USMC "good ole boy" network extended to VMI, the Citadel, Texas A&M, and Norwich. USNA... not so much.
My understanding is that the command was doing well under LtCol Featherstone, but he and his pilot hot dogged a low pass at a public event.

As a soldier, having read the article, I find it surprising that flying too low and too fast one time results in a firing. I am wondering what else may have happened then or in the past that would justify this
