I think you’re referring to The United States Marine Band, “The President’s Own”, CW5 Jack Cardwell. According to the article, all members of The Marine Corps Band of San Diego “have been through boot camp, Marine combat training, and the Naval School of Music, where you learn things like marching drill and ceremonial sequences,” Panos said. “Aside from offering a salary and medical benefits for your family, we offer the sense of accomplishment and pride that comes with being in the Marine Corps.” These are traditional Marines that happen to play music in a band. They are not John Philip Sousa's band.

On the other hand, The United States Marine Band “The President’s Own“, utilizes professional musicians. “The [U.S.] Marine Band recruits experienced musicians; members are selected through a rigorous audition procedure and must satisfy additional security and physical requirements to be eligible. Selected band members serve under a four-year contract as active duty enlisted Marines and are subject to the Uniform Code of Military Justice and physical standards. Members of The President's Own are the only members of the United States Armed Forces not required to undergo recruit training and do not perform combat missions. Also, they are not assigned to any unit other than the Marine Band. Musicians of other Marine bands are required to attend boot camp and Marine Combat Training (MCT).” PO1 William "Chip" Nagel, it is this band that was conducted by John Philip Sousa.

On May 7, 1997, I attended the Friday Evening Parade held on the parade deck at the Marine Corps Barracks (8th and I) in Washington, DC. There I saw and heard The President’s Own, as well as the United States Marine Drum and Bugle Corps ("The Commandant's Own") and the Silent Drill Platoon. It was an incredible experience!
The photo is of The President's Own performing at the Evening Parade.

LTC Stephen C. Gee whiz! I thought that when I specified “The Marine Band”, that even the Rally Point sharpshooters would understand whom I was referring to!

PO1 William "Chip" Nagel Several years ago, after a small reception in the HQ area, I was privileged to attend a performance of The Marine Band and The Silent Drill Platoon at Area ? @ Camp Pendleton.

After the performance, the audience was invited onto the drill field to visit w/ members of the Band and Silent Platoon!

Beautiful, well spoken Marines chatted w/ myself and my son.

I was chagrined that I could no longer had the strength to do Inspection Arms w/ an M-1 Garand Rifle.

One band member, when I asked how he had arrived at the Marine Band said he had “auditioned”. When I asked if he had to play in lesser bands to prove himself, he said no, his audition was good enough to be assigned to ‘The Marine Band’!
