As the convoy of buses, trucks and cars rolled west on Route 80, Commanding Officer Capt. John Murtagh of the U.S. Marines said he did some math in his head. It was 310 days since Golf Company, 2nd Battalion, 25th Marines deployed from Picatinny Arsenal on July 5, 2018.
Lights flashed as firefighters and police stood along side their vehicles. The crowd cheered, welcoming busloads of Marines home as they pulled into the arsenal parking lot.
The homecoming Saturday was for 165 Marines returning from Afghanistan, escorted by 41 police departments from each of their hometowns.
The leathernecks lined up for roll call and after a cry of “Hoorah” they were instructed to find their families.
