The whole award system is a farce. Putting this into perspective, there are those of us who did our jobs without complaint and fully committed to the mission at hand. Despite risk to life and limb we did our job day in and day out, in some of the most extreme of cases. It is the "Lazy scared officer or senior ranking NCO within our unit that hid. Then upon completion of our rotation they are the first in line to receive their BSM. Really?! the highest award an enlisted guy can get is an ARCOM because he's just some lowly PVT, PFC, SPC, CPL, SGT or SSG. Does this young man bleed any less, does he (or his family) have less to lose? Don't even get me started on my Marine Brothers, these guys are even treated worse. Is bravery, dedication to duty, selfless sacrifice only something officers are capable of? Here's an idea, less reward for those who are incompetent and scared and more reward for those willing to do what many are afraid too.

SFC (Join to see) - Which is my point to begin with. You were retiring and told that only those in 1SG's and above get LOM. In the Army a 1SG would be very lucky to be recommended for an LOM the best he can hope for is an MSM. Which is where the disparity lies.

PO3 Steven Sherrill - No, I can recall vividly one of my Joe's (a PFC) moving under fire to a burning vehicle and pulled out two other SM's before the vehicle exploded. His award I recommended him for was a SS was downgraded to an ARCOM, no "V" device. That is just one instance there are several more.

1LT (Verify To See) - No worries, takes a great deal for me to be insulted. However, as to writing awards I can relate to those that were in need of revision or major editing. This is an area where we both understand quite well. I do understand that an award cannot be declined, but the sad reality is that, I consistently ran into officers who failed to recommend deserving awards for those Soldiers whose performance was deserving. Let me put into context, CPT (I won't mention a name), specifically told me that "you'll have a hard time getting this approved if the officers approving it do not have one." So regardless of how well an award recommendation is written Soldiers are often left out in the cold. I ran into this situation personally at the recommendation for one of my PH's. It was "recommend disapproval" all the way to the CG. The CG, however, approved it and a great many people were pretty upset. And yes, the criteria for a PH is different from that of any other award, but there are some officers who do in fact think in this fashion which again fails to honor the whole premise of why we issue awards for exemplary duty and actions which go above and beyond the average Joe.

You hit the nail on the head. I have even heard to Officers discussing which award they wanted to be put in for. In my time on a LRP team the highest rank was Sgt. and no awards would be approved because no one on the team could put anyone else in for awards. I do agree that the Marines do a better job of policing the issue of metals.

Long wait times is not the Marine Corps issue, its the lack of awards they give or the unbalanced amount given based by MOS and Unit. Awards should be approved by platoon level first then sent up to avoid only officers and E-7 and above getting awards. I know guys that gave their bodies, youth and now sanity to this county and didn't even get a NAM while others got awards for just being in the right MOS and Unit.

1LT Lee Chr - again go fuck yourself you havent proven shit just lumped accusation after accusation going with what you think you know. I was prepared to scan the award and other verifiable docs. after thinking about it, NO. as far as bncoc it was a typo. again I have docs 25A doesnt mean you know all to be all I did have all 3 NCO's there they stayed out of my way and let me do my job dealing with 4 different DPUs on 3 different continents. all this was long before your plug and play kiddie school of 25A

and I wasnt complaining just relating my experience. busted my ass for an AAM I could wipe my ass for. I had thought the effort should of earned me with a arcom considering the 2 SNCO's got MSM's but I never really cared I had already maxed out points on awards waiting with 921 pts the year after I got out the points fell to 450 and stayed there for 6 months. even the walking dead would of made SSG

1LT Lee Chr - nope never felt slighted. just frustrated the promotions were the way they were, but I worked hard for it and did what needed to be done. I am proud of what Ive done but I have never bragged about any of it because out here in the civilian world nobody gives a shit about your experience, knowledge. I rambled off some DCA regs and the response back was "SO"
