It's quite a story. I enjoyed the Hollywood movie. I have the utmost respect for air crew members during WWII. Continuing to go up despite seemingly insurmountable odds takes serious stones. The psychological stresses involved are hard to comprehend for anyone who has not served in similarly high stress combat situations.

I find it amazing that with the absolute lack of post service psychological care available that so many lived with PTSD untreated, and unmentioned, across the services and across the country. Sad.

One of my friend's father (and our neighbor) was a B-17 pilot during WWII and participated in the fire bombing of Dresden. I remember him as a soft-spoken religious man who owned a photography shop in town. My father told me at some point when I was a teenager (and I don't remember what precipitated the conversation) that he had been medically discharged after having a breakdown and became a "quiet alcoholic" (my dad's term). He eventually got and stayed sober on his own because the VA couldn't/wouldn't help him, even though he had a medical discharge. Dad refused to use VA for anything, even when I tried later in life to get him to register with them. His response was always "They wouldn't help Ben; why should I bother."

Can't pick on the Air Force too much (even though they were Army during this time period, LOL). The B-17 sure as hell got the job done!
