I expect many were affected by long-term exposure to burn pits by being down wind from the locations SSG Derrick L. Lewis MBA, C-HRM In NBC training for decades we plotted down-wind radiological hazard areas depending upon size and type of detonation.
The concept applies here as well. There should have been rules about how close the pit could be to living and eating areas.
My only direct experience to chemical burns was when my eyes were burned because I was wearing multi-day contacts when I was sleeping during an exercise in 1986 and somebody tossed a CS grenade into my tent. I have no been able to use contacts since because of the irritation to my eyes. Thankfully no significant damage was done to my vision.
