There is a big difference from "safe to sail" and "we will be okay if there is an accident." I was on a ship deemed safe to sail and we lost all power as soon as we took the first swell out of San Diego (kind of embarrassing as a brand new Chief Engineer). My guess is that they had underlying material issues that made this problem bigger. Unfortunately, the peacetime Navy in any country is a dangerous business. Hoping for the best...

This is a sad situation and I'm sure Naval and non Naval people worldwide feel sad for the families and the crew of The Missing submarine. Thank you for this post. I have been tracking it since the story first broke I think a week ago.

Previous article mentions boat was cut in two for major alterations. Guessing, but bad welds could have caused implosion. It will take a long time for the exact cause to be publically known. Security is top concern.
